Life: Monthly Summary April

April 30, 2015

  • Spending the weekend in Brighton for my beautiful friend Lizzie's hen do. It was such a great weekend with plenty of chocolate, prosecco, games and dancing. We all dressed up as Where's Wally on the Saturday night which was a lot of fun!
  • Eating plenty of Easter Eggs
  • Visiting my parents in Lincoln for the long Easter weekend and then enjoying a beautiful bank holiday Monday with a lovely walk around Brockley
  • Celebrating my birthday with drinks after work with some of my favourites
  • Going to Barcelona with Chris for a few days - we had such an amazing time and I would go back in a heartbeat

  • Lots of great recipes from fellow bloggers. Really want to try these two from Rosie and Gemma - One Pan Spring Chicken and Grilled Egg in a Portabello Mushroom.
  • Glamour magazine. I used to buy a million magazines every month, heading to WHSmith as soon as they came out but these days I favour blogs. Glamour however is the one magazine that I always buy and read cover to cover.

  • Once Upon a Time. I am absolutely obsessed with this show! If you love fairytales, and Disney then you will love this. I have just finished series 1 on Netflix and can't wait to get up to date. The best thing is that Prince Charming and Snow White are together in real life!
  • Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. This is another great show on Netflix - it's about a girl who has been rescued from a cult and has to adjust to live in NYC. The show is created by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock and is just hilarious. I love Titus!

Beauty: Recent purchases

April 28, 2015

I wanted to share a few recent beauty purchases - and one gift. I took advantage of the 3 for 2 deal in Superdrug (how can you resist? I also bought three new foundations from Boots- whoops!) and firstly bought the Collection Eyes Uncovered Palette in Nude Bronze which is an absolute bargain and full of some great eye shadows - will do a full post with swatches on this soon. I also bought the Maybelline Brow Drama in Deep Blonde after seeing Tanya Burr rave about it in her monthly favourites. This is basically a mascara brush with a ball at the end and contains a brow gel. I have been enjoying using this after filling my brows with MAC Omega eyeshadow as it leaves a really nice natural finish.

I also picked up the Rimmel Sweetie Heart Velvet Matte Pastel nail polish in You're Mine. This is such a lovely peachy/nude colour and will look amazing with a tan - the only annoying thing is that it's not the easiest to apply and a bit streaky.

The final product was a gift and it's the Benefit Roller Lash Mascara. I adore this mascara - it has definitely lived up to the hype for me. The wand has tiny hooks that pull your lashes up to create great length and curl - and it really works! It doesn't provide much volume so sometimes I double up my mascaras to add this.

Have you bought any new products recently?

Life: My Travel Bucket List

April 26, 2015

I love going on holiday and exploring new places. I haven't done the proper 'gap year' thing as enjoy my home comforts too much, but did do a month of inter railing around Europe which was so much fun and a great way to see lots of different places in a short space of time. As you probably know, one of my favourite places to go to is Florida. I just adore it and could talk about it forever. Being able to travel and to see the world is something that we are so lucky to be able to do and I will never take it for granted.

Transun have asked bloggers to write a post about their top three dream travel bucket list destinations with the winner getting a trip to see the Northern Lights (amazing hey?!). So here are the three places that I really really want to visit...

1. Blue Lagoon, Iceland
I would absolutely love to visit Iceland - it seems full of the most magical experiences like seeing the Northern Lights and of course, the Blue Lagoon. I just can't believe the Blue Lagoon is a real place which is why I really want to experience it for myself. I have heard great things about bathing in the warm, vibrant blue water and how relaxing it is- I really want to try the mud masks too as I know it's meant to be amazing for your skin! It is a place that looks wonderful for your wellbeing so why would you ever not want to visit?

2. New York City, USA
The Big Apple. Surely this is somewhere that everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime. I have watched this incredible city feature in films and TV shows for years and am dying to go there. I want to hail a yellow cab, stroll through Central Park, pay a visit to Henri Bendel, buy cupcakes from the Magnolia Bakery and go to the top of the Rockefeller Center to look at the incredible view.

3. Sydney, Australia
I would love to spend some time in Sydney (and Australia in general actually) - the way of living hugely appeals to me. I have a few friends who have moved out there in the past couple of years and their photos just make me want to get straight on a plane! The weather is obviously a big draw, but Sydney just seems full of beautiful places and has the beaches to enjoy too. It's the dream!

I would love to know which places are on your travel bucket list - do tell!

Fashion: Kate Spade Cedar Street Lacey Wallet

April 19, 2015

Chris did very well with my birthday present this year - he was never going to go wrong with Kate Spade as I love everything that they do. He bought me their very beautiful Cedar Street Lacey wallet in Vivid Snapdragon.

It's a great sized continental purse - perfect for fitting in all of my cards. It has a dot printed lining and comes with 12 credit card slots, two sections for notes, a zipper change pocket and an exterior slide pocket.

I have been enjoying using it so much and have received many compliments - I also love how it's so easy to find in my bag as it's a big purse and so bright.

The Kate Spade Cedar Street Lacey wallet comes in 5 different colour combinations and you can find it here.

Beauty: ghd Rose Gold Professional V Styler

April 14, 2015

My original ghds were a faithful friend for 6 years before they were broken by my not-clumsy-at-all boyfriend (hi Chris!). After trying with other straighteners, I realised how much I was missing my ghds and so my parents bought me the Rose Gold Professional V Styler for my birthday.

Isn't it a beauty? I am in love. This limited edition set comes with the styler, a heat resistant rose gold roll bag, a protective plate guard and 2 sectioning clips.

It has all of the usual super ghd features including smooth plates so that they glide through hair, ceramic heaters and sleep mode so that they automatically turn off after 30 minutes.

This set costs £130 and is available here.

Life: 10 things I love about living in London

April 12, 2015

I have a real love/hate relationship with London. I will have one day where I detest the noise, the traffic and the people but then the next day it will be sunny and beautiful and I will feel so happy to live here. Here are ten reasons why I love it.

1) It's simple but just living in one of the most fantastic capital cities in the world. It may be busy and crazy and full of pollution but it's so wonderful to live in a place where so much is happening.

2) There is SO much to do. Think of anything and you can find it in London. Fancy going to a cafe that only serves cereal? Check. Want to have breakfast at 3am in Duck and Waffle? Check. Feel like rowing across the Serpentine? Check. Fancy being in the audience of a TV show? Check.

3) It's so easy to get places. Everywhere is connected and the transport system is so straightforward to use. The tube may be hot, but it will get you from A to B in no time. Apps like Citymapper just make it even more simple.

4) Choice. So much choice. From shops, to restaurants, to galleries. Choosing a takeaway always takes us hours.

5) London is full of tall buildings, and hustle and bustle, but at the same time it has so much greenery and peaceful places. There are so many beautiful parks - St James, Hampstead Heath, Regents - to name a few!

6) There is so much history in this city - I love walking around and imagining what it was like all of those years ago. One of my favourite places is London Bridge where you can see modern buildings like the Gherkin next to the Tower of London.

7) There are some really special markets that you can go to. There are the huge famous ones like Borough Market and Columbia Road Flower Market, but also fantastic local ones. We live near Brockley Market which is a weekly food market and full of delicious, fresh food.

8) Everything is open. When I leave London I always struggle with places closing early. Places being closed on a Sunday? What even?!

9) This is me being a total web geek but you are so connected. Internet is fast and there is 4G in most places. There's even wi-fi on the underground! We have a 35MB internet speed, whereas my Dad in the Lincolnshire countryside has barely 1MB. Soz Dad!

10) Walking over Waterloo Bridge at any time of the day, but especially at night. London is lit up and so magical. I always feel so amazed and privileged to live in such a wonderful city.

Beauty: My travel make-up

April 07, 2015

I often spend weekends away from my flat in London - whether it be visiting friends around the country or seeing my family who live in Lincoln.

For Easter weekend, Chris and I visited both of our parents so I thought I'd show what I packed in my make-up bag for the three days we were away. These products are what I usually bring and it rarely changes - sometimes I'll bring my Naked Basics palette, or a different foundation but it generally looks like the above.

Apologies for the very worn products - you can tell I use them regularly!

Face stuff

At the moment I am loving the Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum Gel foundation so brought this with me. I will be doing a full post about this soon but safe to say, it leaves skin looking super flawless. My two go-to concealers are the Maybelline Erase Eye Concealer for under my eyes, and Maybelline Fit Me Concealer (I have used it so much that the label has worn off!). Both are so easy to blend and really help to cover circles and blemishes.

For blush, I am a huge fan of the MaxFactor Miracle Touch Creamy Blusher in creamy pink as it's so quick and gives a lovely natural flush to your cheeks.

I have been using MAC's Eyeshadow in Omega to fill in my brows for about two years now - it is so great for ashy blonde eyebrows.

For eyeshadow, I love my quad palette from MAC which I carry Patina, Satin Taupe, Brule and Cork in - a mixture of matte and more shimmery shades which can be used day and night. I use these colours so often, as you can probably tell! My trusty liquid eyeliner is Collection's Fast Stroke Eye Liner and this is probably the fourth bottle I've purchased as it's such a bargain at £2.99. It does wear off on my eyes a bit during the day but at £2.99 you really can't complain. The final product for eyes is mascara - at the moment I'm using MaxFactor's False Lash Effect which is a mascara I have used on and off since I was 18.

These four brushes are undoubtedly my most used. For applying and blending foundation I use the Real Techniques Buffing Brush which makes the job so quick and easy. For my eyebrows I use a Sonia Kashuk angled brush which I bought from SpaceNK years ago and unfortunately you can't buy her products here any more - they are available from Target in the US though.

Finally for eyeshadow I have the MAC 239 and 226 brushes.

What products do you always take on a weekend away?

Beauty: Make-Up Memory Lane

April 05, 2015

I love a beauty reminiscing session and when I read Laura's post with a tag asking questions all about her make-up memories I just had to join in with the nostalgia fun. So here goes...

First makeup item ever purchased
I think it was a clear lip gloss from Rimmel - I used to pile it on so my lips were ridiculously glossy, and sticky. I remember I then bought a fuchsia coloured dazzle dust from Barry M and had the ingenious idea of mixing the two together to make a pink gloss. I don't know why I didn't just buy a pink lipgloss!

First MAC item
It was their Studio Sculpt foundation. I bought it shortly after I started in a 'proper' post-Uni job and actually had some money to spend. I don't think I got colour matched or anything - I found the whole experience quite overwhelming so quickly decided on it, paid and swiftly left the counter! I remember using it for the first time was so exciting - I felt so swish.

First MAC/other brand collection
I don't remember which it was in, but the 226 brush from MAC was in a collection and it was sold out everywhere. I managed to hunt one down and was super pleased. I still use it regularly. I love how crazy everyone used to go for collections 'back in the day'.

First high end make up splurge
This is all a bit MAC themed but it was MAC. I made an online order and after buying four products, felt ridiculously giddy and guilty about spending so much!

First makeover experience
I've actually never had the full makeover experience at a counter. I have watched my friends and family have them but haven't done it myself- I've always been wary of being pressured to buy products (I am so rubbish at saying no) and also slightly scared of walking out looking orange.

First makeup brush
It will have been a very standard Boots or Superdrug own brand brush I think. First branded make-up brush will have been the MAC 239 which again, I still use every day.

First eyeshadow
I think it was one of the Barry M Dazzle Dusts in a gold shade, or even one of the pure glittery ones. I think I spilt it on the floor quite a few times, and it was a nightmare to travel with!

First skincare 'investment'
I bought the Clinique 3 step routine when I was 16. I think it was being heavily advertised at the time and I got sucked into it. I used the soap, toner and moisturiser religiously until I realised it didn't seem to be doing my skin much good. Later down the line I had a facial and the facialist commented on how my skin was quite dry and stripped of natural oils - she asked straight out if I had used the Clinique 3 step. I have heard that this cleansing system isn't the best from a few people now - although I imagine the formulation may have changed now!

First nail polish owned
Probably a very standard pink or purple from Boots Seventeen.

First fake tan attempt
I used to use the gradual tanner moisturiser from Garnier quite regularly but my first proper fake tan experience was with the St Moritz foam - when it was all the rage!

Beauty: Jo Malone Wood Sage & Sea Salt Cologne

April 02, 2015

I received my first Jo Malone perfume at Christmas in a set. It was a miniature pomegranate noir cologne and I am still completely in love with it - it's such a classic, beautiful scent. As pomegranate noir feels like more of an Autumn/Winter fragrance to me I was keen to get a new bottle for spring. Jo Malone's Wood Sage & Sea Salt was an easy decision after seeing so much praise online.

Rather than hopelessly describe the scent, I can tell you that the top note is ambrette seeds, the heart note is sea salt and the base note is sage. It's a woody fragrance but has a real fresh feel because of the sea salt and oh, it really is just wonderful. It just reminds me of spring, being outdoors near the coast and happy times.

I am having to stop myself from applying it every day. It really is a scent that is impossible to not like.
